About The Association of Energy Engineers® (AEE®)

The Association of Energy Engineers® (AEE®), founded in 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA by Albert Thumann, is a non-profit professional society of over 17,000 members and 32,000 active certifications, in over 125 countries. The mission of AEE is “to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for Sustainable Development.”
Founded in the USA, AEE initially spread its wings internationally under a number of USAID programs, where AEE would assist in the development of countries professional energy service, by running initial training in the country of the Certified Energy Management training program to upskill people in the country and then proctor the CEM examination to assess the effectiveness of skills learned, and usually set up a local chapter of AEE to provide longevity to the skills learned in the country.
This has now developed wider where in countries throughout the world AEE has worked with local individuals to form chapters of AEE. AEE also has training partners throughout the world where approved partners provide training to allow individuals take the AEE Certification examination.
AEE chapters provide a vital function for AEE. They provide feedback on the relevance of areas of technical energy information, new technologies, legislation etc to AEE programs to ensure that AEE Certifications provide certifications to individuals that are up to date with relevant energy technologies. They also assist in ensuring that existing AEE Certified Professionals have relevant CPD activities to participate in to keep up to date with technologies.
The AEE Assistant Directors for International Development (ADIMD’s) provide a vital link between AEE Chapters and AEE professional staff in HQ. AEE has an ADIMD for Western Europe and another for Central and Eastern Europe.
The Strategic Direction of AEE is agreed by the Board of Directors who are elected to the role and work with the AEE professional staff to ensure that AEE always remains relevant to our members . The Board is made up of persons from throughout the world to reflect the global nature of AEE.
